Background

Published in 2012, A Peculiar People is the narrative of the emergence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the state of the world at the time. J. My Thoughts

The book tries to keep as neutral as possible. In fact, I’m still not sure if Fluhman is on one side or the other on the debate against my religion. However, it did bring up a number of fairly interesting points about the state of our nation at that time.

Recommendation

I’m on the fence with this one. It was good background knowledge but I didn’t enjoy it. I appreciate the author trying not to pick a side.

The Road

My Thoughts

While the book was well done, it was so depressing. I would truly hope that we as humans act a little better than what was portrayed. I think someone needs to give Cormac McCarthy a hug…

Recommendation

If you liked Grapes of Wrath, then you likely need a hug too. However, you’d likely like this one as well.

My Thoughts

Another fix it quick book on inner peace. However, I did like the list she came up with.

  1. Give yourself a bedtime. (Good advice)
  2. Plan on Fridays. (I haven’t managed it yet.)
  3. Move by 3pm. (Done)
  4. Three times a week is a habit. (Interesting thought. Could be translated to be kind to yourself.)
  5. Create a backup slot. (Again, good advice)
  6. One big adventure, one little adventure. (Hard to do but why not?)
  7. Take one night for you. (Never going to happen with kids, church, work, and a spouse. Maybe when I’m quite older.)
  8. Batch the little things. (Good advice)
  9. Effortful before effortless. (Do the hard things first, again, good advice.)

Recommendation

Not bad as these books tend to go.

My Thoughts

Again, I thought they did a great job with the next book. This could have ended the series and it would have been just as good.

Recommendation

Good book!

My Thoughts

Such a good book! It even made my Christmas list. Most people don’t have a clue of what to say or how to say it. This book can help!

Recommendation

If you are speaking in the near future, get this book and follow the concepts. It will be worth it.

Mortal Engines

My Thoughts

As dumb as the concept is, it was a fun book. It had some really good character development and was just a good read. Of course, I watched the movie shortly after reading it. Honestly, I don’t know why I do that… They hacked the story-line to bits.

Recommendation

Skip the movie and read the book.

My Thoughts

In general, it was a lot of pseudoscience BS. I didn’t get much out of this and don’t have too much to say about the book other than it seemed over-hyped for what it was. I agree we all have much more potential than what is realized but it doesn’t come from wishing it so.

However, it did hit at an interesting time as it is just before Thanksgiving. We have so much. It almost seems like an insult to ask or expect more…

Recommendation

Skip this one.

UnDo It

Background

Published in January of 2019, UnDo It is a book by two medical doctors on how diet and lifestyle can improve your health.

My Thoughts

While I agree that diet and exercise are important, I think this book makes claims way beyond what should be expected of both. If the key to immortality were plant based diet and exercise, our ancestors would still be with us today.

Recommendation

Went a little too far.

Age Proof

My Thoughts

I enjoyed the book. It was a fun paring of both the financial and physical knowing we will want both in the years to come. Good advise on both topics were given and the book was in a very readable form.

Recommendation

It was worth the read.

Outlander

Outlander

My Thoughts

It certainly had an interesting back story and the author knows how to keep the reader engaged but I didn’t really like it. The main character was a little too much “Mary Sue” for me and I didn’t really like how she handled herself. I was looking for a good series but this just wasn’t it.

Recommendation

Skip it. For this 12 book series, I am one and done.
