What it Means to Be a Man
My Thoughts
I used to work for General Mullen and I devoured this book when I saw it came out. It gave me a few things to think about but really was a reflection of the man he is.
Published in 2005, Infernal Devices is the third book in the “Mortal Engines Quartet”. It follows Predator’s Gold and starts the story 16 years after the last book ended. This story picks up with their child (Wren) and her adventures become the catalyst to change all their lives.
Infernal Devices
My Thoughts
Another good book but a little slower than the last. It took me a minute to take a shine to Wren and the other new characters.
Published in August of 2022, MindReader makes the claim that you will never be lied to again on it’s cover. It is a guide to attempt to understand what is the motivation behind people and what might clue you in on it.
MindReader
My Thoughts
Of course, you can’t actually read minds but I do agree most people are pretty easy to get a handle on. However, these days there are more and more people who are coming out of their specific echo chambers and may not fit the mold you may expect.
Recommendation
It was OK. There was no “Ah-hah” moments throughout the book.
Published in 2012, A Peculiar People is the narrative of the emergence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the state of the world at the time. J. Spencer Fluhman makes the arguement that “Mormonism” was so persecuted at least partly due to the social and economic issues in mid 17th century America.
A Peculiar People
My Thoughts
The book tries to keep as neutral as possible. In fact, I’m still not sure if Fluhman is on one side or the other on the debate against my religion. However, it did bring up a number of fairly interesting points about the state of our nation at that time.
Recommendation
I’m on the fence with this one. It was good background knowledge but I didn’t enjoy it. I appreciate the author trying not to pick a side.
Published in September of 2006, The Road is a dystopian story of a father and his son in a post war torn America. The Road they are traveling is full of dangers and this is no place to raise a child.
The Road
My Thoughts
While the book was well done, it was so depressing. I would truly hope that we as humans act a little better than what was portrayed. I think someone needs to give Cormac McCarthy a hug…
Recommendation
If you liked Grapes of Wrath, then you likely need a hug too. However, you’d likely like this one as well.
Published in November of 2001, Mortal Engines is a dystopian future where the traction cities are on the move eating each other and they are fighting against the anti-traction league to for the right to do so.
Mortal Engines
My Thoughts
As dumb as the concept is, it was a fun book. It had some really good character development and was just a good read. Of course, I watched the movie shortly after reading it. Honestly, I don’t know why I do that… They hacked the story-line to bits.

Abundance
My Thoughts
In general, it was a lot of pseudoscience BS. I didn’t get much out of this and don’t have too much to say about the book other than it seemed over-hyped for what it was. I agree we all have much more potential than what is realized but it doesn’t come from wishing it so.
However, it did hit at an interesting time as it is just before Thanksgiving. We have so much. It almost seems like an insult to ask or expect more…
