My Thoughts

I grew up with Fred Saberhagen’s books in my home so I thought I’d give this one a go. Honestly, it wasn’t that great. The premise seems fine, but I guess there were so many ways he could have take the book and I was disappointed in where it went.

Recommendation

I’d skip this one.

Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus

Background

Published in 1818, “Frankenstein,” written by Mary Shelley tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist driven by his obsession with creating life. Experimenting with galvanism and chemistry, he successfully animates a creature from lifeless body parts. However, horrified by his creation’s grotesque appearance, Victor abandons the being, setting in motion a tragic series of events. The creature, rejected by society and desperate for acceptance, becomes increasingly isolated and vengeful, ultimately leading to a confrontation between creator and creation that explores themes of scientific ethics, the consequences of unchecked ambition, and the complexities of human identity and empathy. The novel raises profound questions about the limits of human knowledge and the responsibilities that come with wielding such power.

My Thoughts

This is one of those books you need to spend some time reading. Not only is it over 200 years old, and the language is beginning to drift, but it is so much different than the expectations given to us by Hollywood and Halloween.

The “creature” is grotesque, inhumanly fast, and extremely articulate. Somehow it was able to acquire complex emotions, drives, and the ability to describe them in a detail a professional psychologist would envy all while keeping far distant from any human. And all it wanted was a female like himself…

My Thoughts

Our hero continues climbing the social and military latter as he once again saves everyone from evil. Lance Warder can’t be stopped and even his enemies learn to like him. (Or at least respect him.)

Recommendation

The books are getting too formulaic. I think I’m going to drop the series.

My Thoughts

Lance Warder does it again with his manly swagger. This futuristic John Wayne takes on all comers and comes out the other side victorious. The reader had a chance to see some new cultures and species but they all seem to be cut from the same cloth.

Recommendation

The books are getting a bit predicable.

My Thoughts

I originally thought to listen to this book while I was running a half marathon but I decided against it. However, it stuck in my mind and I realized I hadn’t watched the movie as of yet. Big mistake! Wow, that movie had almost nothing to do with the book… Don’t watch the movie!!!

So, I had to re-read the book. I loved it again! This hits me in all the right places as it touches on so much of my childhood and the things I loved back then.

Recommendation

Love it! If you were a computer loving child of the 80’s, I think you will love it too.

However, the radical group known as the Veles does not want contact to occur and attempts to sabotage the mission.

My Thoughts

This book was somewhat like a teenager’s idea of what would make a good Sci-Fi. Lance is very overpowered and is the only one who really understands what is going on. The other characters are two dimensional and are hardly needed by Lance or the story as a whole. Even the love scenes read like someone didn’t quite know what kissing a girl was like.

Of course, this doesn’t mean it wasn’t a fun read. The action keeps the book moving along but there are some groan-worthy moments.

Recommendation

I’m on the fence but I will continue through the series.

The Terraformers

My Thoughts

This book was garbage. It is full of ridiculous concepts and is completely barren of morality. It promotes socialistic goals from the most childish formats imaginable. Everyone and everything is a person in this book complete with rights, feelings, and so on. (E.g. Worms, machines, a door…) Seriously, the only requirement is the ability to speak. By this definition my washing machine is alive because it announces when a load is complete. Should I have to consider how it feels when it breaks down and respect it’s rights to live in it’s “home”? Does it have equal say in my home with everyone else that lives there? These are the deep questions asked by this book. I kept reading to the end and hoping it would get better. It didn’t…

Recommendation

Pure crap.

The Long Earth

Background

The group uses this ability to explore these new worlds and to try to find a way to stop a mysterious force that is trying to destroy them.

My Thoughts

This was such and interesting book and was one of those concepts you can step back and reflect on for some time. Terry Pratchett is a master of storytelling and really brought me into the story. Much can be extrapolated from the text; theories of evolution, science, chaos theory, multiverse, and so on.

Recommendation

Long but enjoyable.

My Thoughts

This was an interesting book as it took several liberties with history and the military to build out a possible scenario for the future. It took a bit to get started as the main character is a little too good for belief. He doesn’t seem to slow down as the book goes on but the other characters become more likeable as they become fleshed out. There were a few things that were discordant to me which likely shouldn’t have been given that it is set 500 years in the future. Still, my exposure to Marines makes me less-than-sympathetic to people who haven’t done their research on their culture. I got over it though.

Recommendation

It was a good enough book for me to get in the door to the series. Let’s see where it goes from here.
