A Wrinkle in Time

Background

A Wrinkle in Time is a 1962 science fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle. The story follows Meg Murry, a young girl who, along with her brother Charles Wallace and friend Calvin O’Keefe, travels through space and time to find her father, a brilliant scientist who has been missing for five years. The novel explores themes of love, courage, and self-acceptance, and it has been praised for its innovative use of science fiction and fantasy elements.

My Thoughts

Honestly, I wasn’t that taken with the story and don’t remember that much about it.

Recommendation

I will have to re-read it.

Slaughterhouse-Five

Background

Slaughterhouse-Five is a novel written by Kurt Vonnegut that follows the life of Billy Pilgrim, a World War II soldier who becomes “unstuck in time” and experiences his life in a non-linear fashion. The novel explores the themes of the destructiveness of war and the inevitability of fate, while also incorporating elements of science fiction and satire. Billy’s experiences as a prisoner of war and a witness to the bombing of Dresden are juxtaposed with his later life as an optometrist and his encounters with aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. Through Billy’s story, Vonnegut challenges traditional notions of storytelling and the linearity of time, ultimately questioning the human capacity for compassion and understanding in the face of senseless violence.

My Thoughts

I wasn’t impressed with this one. Vonnegut is a master writer to be sure. His method of writing comes across as both easy and sincere and the reader is effortlessly transported to the story.

However, the story was very strange. I actually liked that it was disjointed and the concept of time travel through life moments was a very interesting thought. When put in context of when this book was released, it was lightyears ahead of it’s time (pardon the pun).

My Recommendation

This book belongs to a different era and was written for a different audience. It is great for historical perspective but I didn’t enjoy it. “So it goes.”

Insurgent

Background

Insurgent is the sequel to Divergent in the series by Veronica Roth. It was published a mere year after Divergent was released.

This time it goes beyond the factions. One is trying to wipe out all the resistance and take over the city.

Insurgent

My Thoughts

Though easy to read and not a bad story there is still too much of the odd self deprecating yet almost unstoppable protagonist who has powers beyond everyone around her. She suffers self doubt constantly yet somehow survives the un-survivable. The world is seen through the eyes of a 16 year old girl and it shows.

Recommendation

If you are a 16 year old girl then you will likely enjoy this book. However, I wouldn’t suggest it for the 16 year old girl. Yet, I was still glad I read it… If nothing else, I know what people are talking about.

The Maze Runner

Background

The Maze Runner was written in 2009 by James Dashner and is the first book in the Maze Runner series. It is a post apocalyptic juvenile fiction book that centers on a gifted 16 year old named Thomas. He finds himself placed in a maze without memories and needing to survive.

My Thoughts

This was a good book and may even want to see the movie. (If nothing else, I’d like to see how they depicted the reavers. Though it was pretty campy at times it was an engaging read and I didn’t get bored reading it.

Recommendations

Be aware there is some nasty violent scenes and some messed up situations. However, if you are good with that, I would recommend the book.

Divergent

Background

Divergent is the story of post-apocalyptic world where the main character is just coming of age. It is part of the Divergent Trilogy and was made into a movie by the same name a mere 3 years after the book’s release.

My Thoughts

I haven’t seen the movie and I don’t know that I will. This book reads a lot like the Twilight Series. That is to say it is teenage girl fodder. It is a decent story and all but there are some surprisingly sensual parts of it that I don’t think the average teenager needs in their life. As a forty something man, it was a bit comical to read about the male characters. If you dropped a teenage girl in the body of man and she tried to act male, this is what you would get.

Just like Twilight, it was made into a movie pretty quickly after the books. It feels a bit like it was made for it.

Recommendation

Probably stick to the movie on this one and skip the book.

Starship Troopers

Background

Heinlein’s iconic book Starship Troopers is about a semi-dystopian future where aliens are not only real but we fight wars against them as well.

My Thoughts

Starship Troopers was something I saw in the movies a long time ago. I remember a few scenes from it but not much else. In my day job with the United States Marines, it gets referenced from time to time and is on the Commandant’s reading list. So… I thought I should read the book. The book is always better right?

In this case, yes. The book was pretty fantastic. I can understand why the Commandant would want Marines to read this as it has some pretty solid lessons as to why we fight, honor, and even where the swagger came from. If you want to get inside Marine’s mind. This is a good place to start.

Recommendations

I wouldn’t say this book is for kids based on the level of violence however I believe it is a solid read for pretty much everyone.

My Comments

I haven’t been able to put this one down. I love all the 80’s comments and references. It’s like being brought back to my childhood. I’m excited for the movie and I’m glad I read the book first. I could do without the profanity and if you stop and think about the dystopian world in which they lived, it is pretty terrifying… Still, fun story.

My Recommendations

I’d wait till I was 14 or so to read it due to some of the scenes being a little off color and the general bad language. However, I have a hard time thinking most people (who didn’t grow up playing video games and role playing games in the 80s) won’t get most of the references. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Mocking Jay

Background

The Mocking Jay is the last of Hunger Games Trilogy and it brings final resolution to the tension between “the Capital” and “the Districts”. Katniss and the team are propelled forward from district 13 to start an uprising climaxing in the final assault on President Snow’s mansion.

My Comments

There is something about the way Suzanne Collins writes which makes me plow on through the story even though I should be sleeping. I enjoyed the read. However, like many guilty pleasures, I have no idea why.

I can’t stand Katniss in this installation of the series. She is such a sanctimonious idiot. Her special combination of outrage coupled with her stupidity and add a dash of not-allowing-others-to-take-responsibility-for-anything, is hard to imagine. It’s hard to buy a spoiled 17 year old with PTSD getting her way over battle hardened soldiers…

It felt a lot like what I used to call Disney ethics. The idea that almost any retaliation is fine, even death, if someone is mean to an animal or gets in your way.

In this book, people are dying right left and center. The whole of Katniss’s community had been completely wiped out but that is glossed over. However, if Primm dies… Whoa, now that’s over the edge.

Recommendation

I still liked it. I will likely read it again… And then again. The first book was so good but it’s hard to leave it there. Ms. Collins, my hat is off to you.

Catching Fire

Background

Catching Fire is the 2nd book in the Hunger Games trilogy. It starts a few months after the first book ended and shows how Katness and Peeta cope with being out of the games. This next book fleshes out the character of President Snow and starts to narrow in on the politics surrounding the capitol. The next round of games brings in former champions and Katness and Peeta find themselves back where they started.

Catching Fire
Catching Fire

My Comments

Another great book but I didn’t like this one quite like the rest. President Snow is far too two dimensional to be real. He is the embodiment of evil and even smells of blood. This is better explained in the next book but for now, he remains a comic book super villain. The other characters become more likeable with the exception of Katness. In the first book she didn’t have a clue as to what was going on and that helplessness worked for her. Now, it’s just her modus operandi and it becomes a bit tiresome in this book. Still, it is a solid read and genuinely entertaining.

Recommendation

Sames as the last… A great read.

The Hunger Games

Background

The Hunger Games was a book before it was a movie. That shouldn’t seem so much of a surprise but everyone seems to grasp on to the movie version. This book tells of a dystopian future where the United States becomes a place called Panem. Where the majority of people are forced in to work in squalor to feed and clothe the “Capital” where the rich and decadent live. Every year an event known as “the Hunger Games” is held. These games pit the children of the poor against each other in a struggle to the death. This first book describes how a young girl of 16 named Katniss manages to live through the games and beyond. Two more books follow; Catching Fire and the Mockingjay.

My Comments

This book was every bit as good it was the first time I read it. The first time was read well before the movie so I was one of those people who thought Woody Harrelson was an odd choice for Haymitch and Jennifer Lawrence was a terrible pick for Katniss. Still, they made a solid movie. The book was and is better though…

Recommendations

Great book. If you can stomach some violence and suspense you will have a great story. Read the book before you see the movie though. It will make it all so much more fun.
